Fan vids and a general audience

(I forgot to post here first and cross-post to LJ, so here is a copy and paste from LJ)
I've presented some of my preliminary research at two academic media conferences now, and some of this has included a discussion of fan vids (I'm also doing activist videos and community videos for my research), and I really don't think most people get what fan vids are (in spite of me actually showing one, with permission of the producer). I think most people have "fan vid = parody" hard-wired into them! The problem is at a conference there is so little time to unearth and root out prejudices ... I shall persevere!
